Jeffery W. Styles, Esq. - Managing Partner

Jeff's primary practice consists of civil litigation involving landlord/tenant and other real-estate related matters, employer/employee disputes and personal injury.
 

As a founding member of The Washington Legal Group, LLC, Jeff has litigated and settled several major cases involving government institutions, contractors, and insurers. Many of these settlements were in the mid six-figure range or higher. Jeff has been involved in multi -year complex landlord litigation involving numerous tenants and properties.

Jeff previously served as Legislative Assistant to former United States Senator Connie Mack - (FL) - (1990-1994). As Legislative Assistant, Jeff was responsible for staffing Senator Mack on housing, urban and economic development, and tax issues. Jeff also advised the Senator as Ranking Member to the United States Senate District of Columbia subcommittee with budget authority over the five billion dollar District of Columbia budget.

Later, Jeff served as General Counsel to the United States Congress Joint Economic Committee (1994-1998), where his daily responsibilities included providing legal advice and support to the Staff Director and the Committee. He was also responsible for a broad range of policy matters, including providing advice on tax and monetary policy involving the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Reserve. Jeff, along with other staff members of the Joint Economic Committee, provided a broad range of support to members in the development of legislation that lead to the creation of the District of Columbia Control Board in the late 90’s. The Control Board was essential to the multibillion dollar revitalization of the District of Columbia in the last decade. His broad legislative and public policy background gives Jeff an unparalleled expertise in understanding and interpreting legislative, administrative, and regulatory policy at every level of government.

After leaving the Hill, Jeff worked as a Government and Industry Relations Manager for Fannie Mae in both Atlanta and Washington, D.C. As a Government and Industry Relations Manager, Jeff was responsible for working with mortgage bankers, real estate professionals, and homebuilders to develop and market multi-billion dollar mortgage products.

Bernard is the Director of Litigation Services at The Washington Legal Group, LLC. As Director of Litigation Services, Bernard is responsible for taking the lead in assisting and supporting all the staff attorneys regarding Litigation, with a particular emphasis on personal injury and other tort litigation.

 

Bernard previously served as an Assistant Compliance Officer for the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission in Bethesda, MD (1991-1995). In that role, Bernard worked directly with the Director of Compliance Alan Schoem and the Director of Enforcement Mark Schoem, and assisted in conducting investigations to determine preliminarily whether products contained defects that presented a substantial product hazard or whether they violated Commission regulations. Bernard participated in regulatory development activities, in the development of proposed compliance strategies, and in the implementation of new regulations. He also provided technical guidance to the Headquarters and field staff, as well as to manufacturers, distributors and retailers of consumer products.

 

After leaving the Commission, Bernard worked as a Senior Legal Assistant for the Law Office of Tony O. Shaw where he headed the litigation department in Washington, D.C. (1995-2004). As a Senior Legal Assistant, Bernard was responsible for interviewing clients, preparing case files, interacting with insurance companies, drafting critical correspondence, and negotiating with opposing counsel.
